We are pleased to announce the return of our Mediation Practicum! The Practicum is designed for those who have completed basic mediation training and wish to further enhance their mediation skills in order to become certified mediators. The application will be posted here on August 15th.
The Application Process
The King County Dispute Resolution Center (KCDRC) is offering a Mediation Practicum. To apply, candidates must have completed a 36 – 40 hour basic mediation training. In addition, candidates must complete an application that will be available on August 15, 2018 on the KCDRC website, and attend an interview. The application is due on September 15, 2018 and the Practicum will begin in October 2018. The Practicum takes approximately 18 months to complete and there will be a cost to participate. Admission to the Practicum is competitive. In the past, more people applied than we were able to admit.
Successful candidates typically have basic skills in active listening, understanding and identifying interests, and asking open-ended questions. In addition, the best candidates are team players: flexible, humble, supportive, and willing to learn.
Description of the Practicum
Practicum students will receive training in mediation skills and theories. They will also observe and co-mediate a variety of disputes, including small claims, workplace, neighbor conflicts, business formations and dissolutions, landlord/tenant conflicts, and interpersonal family disputes. Students will also get the chance to practice their skills by conducting several mock mediations. To complete the Practicum and become a certified mediator, candidates may be required to pass a final mock mediation.
